Delicious and Easy Kids Breakfast Ideas

I am often asked how I get the kids fed and out the door by 7 am. A huge part of the reason is our night time routine leaves the kids (relatively) well-rested and ready to go. We also have a morning routine that streamlines the day immensely. But, having breakfast staples and ideas planned and ready in the fridge or freezer is key for us (and replenish frequently!). If you need some inspiration for delicious and easy kids breakfast ideas, here are our favorites.

Pancakes

Pancakes on weekdays? Yes! We use the Trader Joe’s Silver Dollar Pancakes often but also, if I make an extra batch of these pancakes on the weekends, I will freeze them (about 4 or 5 in a zip top bag) and pop them in the microwave for a quick, warm breakfast, topped with maple syrup or fruit. Waffles also fall into this category- I usually get multigrain and add a nut butter with sliced apples or other fruit on the side.

Oatmeal

Believe it or not, this is actually the most requested breakfast from my kids. I use old-fashioned oats which take me less than 5 minutes to make on the stovetop. I add honey while it’s cooking and one of my daughters likes to add cinnamon and the other enjoys it when I mix in peanut butter. Sometimes, I will cook down apples with butter and cinnamon if I have extra time, but this doesn’t happen often.

Hard (or medium or soft) boiled eggs

My regular go-to- prepare these eggs ahead of time, in a sealed container in the fridge, and makes a quick and nutritious breakfast. Add some toast, fruit or supplement any of the other options on this list.

Avocado Toast

A delicious and quick kids breakfast idea is avocado toast. Usually I use wheat or multigrain bread but occasionally brioche, sometimes topped with a fried egg or soft boiled egg (see above).

Yogurt and granola

My kids are variable when it comes to yogurt in the mornings, but this is easy to have on hand. Also works as a quick supplement if someone is complaining that they are still hungry!

Scrambled eggs on toast

If I have extra time in the morning, or my husband is doing drop off, I will do a quick scrambled egg sandwich which my kids love. This is a nostalgic egg sandwich for me. (Also interesting note, this is also how I make scrambled eggs- see video starting at 3:20 time stamp).

Bagels

We love our bagels and if we have fresh ones from the local deli, the kids will ask for this. We may add an egg, smoked salmon (which we sometimes have from Costco) or just cream cheese.

Frozen Chinese buns

There are frozen Chinese buns at the Asian market which you should steam (not microwave) for a fluffy, warm breakfast. It takes a few more minutes, but as soon as I stumble out of bed, I put on a bit of water to boil, set up the steaming basket with toss a few buns inside. It takes less than 10 minutes, but during that time, my kids are stumbling out of their own beds, getting dressed or checking their bookbags anyways. By the time they are done with those tasks, the buns are done and cooling and ready to eat!

My kids love the red bean buns and the yellow custard, which are sweet. We also will occasionally get meat or vegetable buns. If we are super lucky, we will have some fresh ones from Chinatown but sadly, we rarely have time to grab them these days.

Fruit

As you can see above, we often use fruit to supplement our breakfast. We always have bananas, apples and oranges. We frequently have pineapple, mango, grapes, a variety of berries. Sometimes kiwi, pomelo, dragon fruit, cherries. Always helps me to have these handy for breakfast and for snacks, so at the beginning of the week, I make sure we have plenty in the fridge.

I hope these ideas for delicious and easy kids breakfasts were helpful and provide some inspiration for you. These are easy items to have on-hand in your fridge and freezer at the beginning of the week so you have one less thing to worry about during your busy weekday mornings.
