5 Top Podcasts for Physicians Contemplating a Career Pivot

Have you ever thought about leaving clinical practice? Whether you’re burned out, or have family obligations or want to pursue another career path? Have you struggled with how you would earn a living outside of traditional clinical medicine? How you might still put your medical degree to use part-time? I have had these questions for years and have explored blogs (finance mostly), books and podcasts, which I’m sharing here. While I haven’t made the leap just yet, I feel well-informed and well-equipped to take the next step should I decide to.

It is empowering to listen to other physicians’ stories, interviews, struggles and strategies. I hope these top podcasts for you as a physician contemplating a career pivot will be enlightening to you.

Heather Fork Carpe Diem Podcast

I love Heather Fork’s podcast! I started listening to it a few years ago and it truly gave me concrete hope that I was not alone. Quite the contrary. There is a whole community of people with thriving lives after leaving a full-time clinical career. Heather is a warm, non-judgemental and knowledgeble guide into this nerve-wracking new world.

John Jurica NonClinical Physicians Podcast

The was one of the first podcasts I found that put a name to what I was looking to pivot to: a non-clinical career. At the time, I was feeling burnout from patient care and pressure from administration, but was loathed to waste my medical training. Her podcast gave me my first eye-opening look into the seemingly endless possibilities.

Marjorie Steigler Career Rx Podcast

This podcast is saturated with inspiring stories and very practical advice especially when it comes to career in the pharmaceutical world, which is a very natural pivot for many physicians given our background. I seriously considered a shift into pharma and this podcast was the first to plant the seed and build the confidence that I needed.

Ali Abdaal Deep Dive Podcast

This is probably an unexpected pick for top podcasts for physicians, but honestly, my favorite podcast to listen to this year! Ali Abdaal was a junior doctor in the UK who made the decision to leave medicine to become an entrepreneur and content creator. This is a work/productivity/entrepreneurship podcast that has challenged me with new ways of thinking of work, life, career and decision-making. Each of these podcasts are a fascinating glimpse into a mindset most physicians are not accustomed to operating under.

Passive Income MD Podcast

There are many wonderful finance blogs and podcasts for physicians, but I really enjoy Peter Kim’s conversations with physicians and other entrepreneurs. I was introduced to a lot of his podcast content through the Leverage and Growth Summit, an online conference I first attended in 2020. (Hopefully there will be one in 2023). There are a ton of ideas on how to generate income and thrive as a physician outside of traditional medical practice. I constantly leave, inspired and awed at what is possible.

I hope you will enjoy listening and learning from my top podcasts for physicians contemplating a career pivot. (You also don’t want to miss this post: 9 Surprising Book Recommendations for Young Doctors (also for mid-career doctors searching for a career change!)
